In the past few years NASA has discovered that our galaxy, and Andromeda, our neighboring galaxy, are on a one way collision course. While its easy to jump to the conclusion that theyll smash into each other resulting in one gigantic explosion, that wont be the case. In fact, the collision will cause the two galaxies to merge with one another. About 4 billion years from now the merger will begin. Since theres so much empty space between stars and solar systems, the chance that stars and planets from Andromeda will collide with the ones from our galaxy are near impossible. Instead, the two galaxies will continue on their course over a time span of millions of years until theyre cores a.k.a. the two supermassive black holes at their centers merge and become one. Thus another galaxy will be born. The danger present to Earth during this event, and the whole solar system for that matter is the probability of it being swept further away from the galactic core, or the worst case scenario, the solar system being fully ejected out of the galaxy. Oh, also, theres a third, smaller galaxy (M33) on a crash course with the Milky Way.
