10 Craziest Facts You Didn't Know About Black Holes
4. Black Holes Bend Space
The reason behind spaghettification being a thing is where a lot of budding scientists give up trying to understand it all as their brains just switch off at the idea of this being a reality.
If you've heard of Albert Einstein, there's a chance you will have word the phrase General Relativity. This is what made Einstein famous before he accidentally helped create a weapon capable of melting the skin off someone's face and leaving their whole city uninhabitable.
The easiest way to comprehend General Relativity is to imagine a bowling ball on a trampoline. The bowling ball pulls the fabric of the trampoline down creating a curve in its surface. If you then roll a marble across the trampoline, its path will be deflected by the dent made by the bowling ball.
Einstein came up with the idea that this was how the universe worked, with stars and planets making these "dents" in the trampoline fabric of the universe. Because black holes are so massive, they make the biggest dents, dents which seem infinite and therefore literally are bending space around them.
The universe isn't as two-dimensional as a trampoline though, so black holes are bending space in all directions around it? WHAT?
Unfortunately, Einstein's theories only get weirder...
