Although observations of this exoplanet began in 2005, it wasn’t officially discovered and categorised until December 2013. This is largely due to the sheer bizarreness of it.

This inexplicable world can be found orbiting the star HD 106906 (337 light years from Earth) in the Crux constellation. However, its orbit is far in excess of what scientists thought conceivable. The planet, which is 11 times the mass of Jupiter, can be found 20 times further away from its star than Neptune is from the Sun, something that all of conventional physics says should not be possible, for either the planet’s formation or the orbit that has been observed.

Not only this, but despite being so far from its parent star, the surface temperature can surpass a scorching 1,500 Celsius - 2,800 Fahrenheit. This is still puzzling astronomers to this day.

Many theories about its formation have been put forward since its discovery, but none has yet to be adopted by the scientific community.
