10 Creepy And Unique Mermaid Designs In Movies And TV

3. Golden & Silver - The Lure

The best word to describe the cannibalistic mermaid sisters in this fairy-tail musical is — absolutely original and totally nuts.

In this polish horror sing-along two sisters from the seas arrive on land to sing in a night club only to fall for the same guy. Where this movie bends the genres like a limp shrimp, it is also impossible to unseen these odd mermaid designs. As singers in a run down nightclub mer-sisters “Golden” and “Silver” are nearly always naked, a symbol of their apparent vulnerability and tenderness. But nakedness was always also a sign of liberty and unleashing — especially in the big old myths.

The sisters mesmerising voices and youthful, immaculate bodies are a source of constant fascination. Though most of the men who leer at them lustfully, are made to regret their mistake — by being eaten by the sweet sisters afterwards. Just like in the most popular fairy tales long silken hair dangles over their breasts, and when splashed with water, they sprout long fish tails to vaguely orgasmic dolphin sounds. When dry, their scaly lower halves are replaced with human legs, something we never see on screen. Though there’s nothing right between them — if you know what I’m saying. Let’s say what our top 10 pick is overcompensating, this one is missing out on entirely.

The sisters Golden and Silver are mystic, perpetually naked sexual fantasies to the human — and the few inhuman — men, a fact that shows us that mystical creatures like satyrs are real in this world. No one really seems to find it odd to employ, flirt with, or perform plastic surgery on a mermaid. And speaking of unique fishtails, the ones in this flick are another story altogether: thick and sluggish they resemble grey eels or — well, yes — slugs, rather than elegant or muscular mermaid tails, and it’s kinda difficult to imagine them transporting these delicate girls through the waves. They are also overly long and lack the traditional pair of fins at the end. Given the similarities in the way eels manoeuvre themselves under the surface, I can absolutely imagine Golden and Silver propelling through the waters in a similar way.

For most part Golden and Silver are almost too innocent and naive, one of them even following the well known Hans Christian Andersen-inspired path of desiring life as a human — and finally getting her lady parts. This scene is strongly reminiscent of J-horror elements, and if Andersen would have taken it to the next level, this “transformation” would have been just as rough and hard to watch as the one that unfolds on the screen in “The Lure” once she climbs on that nasty operating table ... These two sisters are portrayed so vastly different from the other picks on this list, especially in the way they look at the world around them. And yet, doe eyed and almost to fragile they radiate oddly predatory characteristics while they are wearing playboy bunny ears.
