Deforestation is often the result of human activity, but it’s more direct that global climate change. In most cases, we remove forests to plant other vegetation, use the lumber for building projects, or various other reasons.

One area of the world has seen large-scale deforestation resulting from global climate change with the loss of millions of trees in the forests of the Rocky Mountains. According to the Union of Concerned Scientists, tens of millions of trees have died off in the area over the past 15 years and the culprit is climate change, which has led to numerous issues all arising at once.

Specifically, the rise in temperatures has resulted in heat and drought, which increase the intensity and duration of wildfires.

The loss of viable trees through fires have left the surviving trees to be fed upon by tree-killing insects called bark beetles at a scale the forests are unable to survive. The U.S. Forest Service estimated that southern Wyoming and northern California lose 100,000 trees daily to the insects, which felled trees across 46 million acres during a 12-year period.
