10 End-Of-The-World Prophecies That Didn't Come True
8. The 1948 Generation Was Going To Be The Last
The Calvary Chapel is an Evangelical branch of Christianity mostly popularised in the US by founder Chuck Smith, a simple pastor who began with the 25-person Costa Mesa congregation in 1965, whose influence since stretched to more than 1,000 churches nationwide and hundreds more overseas. And yet, his prediction skills were so terrible. Considered one of the most influential figures in modern American Christianity, people paid Smith's word a lot of credit. Which is mostly fine when it comes to Bible studies (when he wasn't be homophobic), and less so when he's making wild proclamations about the end of the world. His form for the latter was far less impressive than his recall of scripture. He said predicted the generation born in 1948 would be the last, with the world would ending in 1981. Smith did hedge his bets a little, admitting he could be wrong but he a deep conviction in my heart, and all my plans are predicated upon that belief. He probably should have listened to his head a bit more to boot.
