3. Charles Manson's 1969 Race War

There was a lot of crazy going on in Charles Manson's head, and untangling it isn't exactly something you want to do if you want to remain in a good mood. Whilst the killings he orchestrated which are widely regarded to have drawn a close to the swingin' sixties are well known, the reasons he gave for them are perhaps less so. Well, most people know that he thought that The Beatles were sending him coded messages that for some reason meant he had to get someone to kill Roman Polanski's pregnant wife, but the whole €œHelter Skelter€ scenario he had sketched out (based on the McCartney-penned song about... a fairground ride) is fairly apocalyptic. The way Manson saw it, the sixties were going to end along with all life on Earth, as humanity collapsed amidst a €œrace war€ between black people and white people. It's pretty much what Peter Dinklange was rambling on about in that one scene of In Bruges. Obviously that never happened, but Manson and his cronies did their level best...
