10 Famous Authors Who Show Up As Characters In Their Own Work

3. Grant Morrison - Animal Man

Animal Man is a lesser-known DC superhero whose primary power is the ability to borrow various animal's traits, like a bird's ability to fly or a cheetah's running speed. In the late 80s when a ton of DC characters were getting reboots, Scottish writer Grant Morrison took a stab at re-imagining him. Initially commissioned for a measly four issues, his run was extended and subsequently lasted several years. At a certain point, however, Morrison went the meta route, inserting himself as a character into the story arc, casually chatting with Animal Man and apologizing for being a mediocre writer (seriously). Specifically, Morrison laments having to put Animal Man through horrific treatment such as killing off his family and refusing to compromise on the realism of his work.
