Eva Perón, AKA Evita, is the most famous Argentinian woman who ever lived. As the second wife of Argentine president Juan Perón, she was an incredibly active first lady and keenly aware of the struggles of the lower class.

Her popularity was so strong that she ran for Vice President of Argentina in 1951, but due to political pressure from her opposition and her declining health had to drop out of the race. She died of cancer shortly after in 1952.

What makes Eva's preserved body so famous is not just the sheer volume of crowds who came to see her, but also the fact that for 16 years no-one actually knew where her corpse was.

In 1955 Eva's widower, President Juan Perón, was deposed by a military coup. The new military ordered that images or even mentions of the former Presidential couple were forbidden, and in 1971 they revealed Eva's body had been buried in a Milan crypt.

Juan Perón, who was living in exile in Spain at this point, had her body exhumed and maintained the corpse in the living room of his house. The same house he lived in with his new wife. Still no idea how Juan managed to swing that one.
