The greatest comedy duo of all time is also the most well-known though they haven't performed since 1955. Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy began their work in 1921 on the film, The Lucky Dog and would go on to star in a total of 107 films consisting of 32 silent movies, 40 shorts, and 23 feature-length theatrical films.

Before they met one another, each man was a well-established actor with more than 50 film credits to Laurel's name while Hardy had more than 250 as an actor, writer, and director (films were much shorter and easier to shoot back in the days of the Classical Hollywood era).

Laurel & Hardy's primary gimmick was slapstick, but they worked on so many projects together, they made passes into multiple genres of comedy. Their most notable work includes Way Out West, The Music Box, Babes in Toyland, Helpmates, Another Fine Mess, and Block-Heads.

The pair worked together in film until 1944 when they closed out their contractual commitments to the studios. They followed this work on the stage performing comedy and musical acts before retiring in 1955. After Hardy passed away in 1957, Laurel never returned to the screen, but did work off-camera via written correspondence until he passed away in 1965.
