Annabelle is actually an antique Raggedy Ann doll that was a gift to a nursing student, Donna, from her mother. Donna resided with a fellow nursing student, and both of the women would find Annabelle in different parts of their home without knowing how she got there. Sometimes she would be standing, sometimes sitting in a corner and they even found her kneeling. While the ladies were never attacked by a satanic cult like in the movie, the doll did seem to leave notes around their apartment. Blood also randomly appeared on the doll, which caused Donna to contact a medium. The medium held a séance and discovered that the doll was possessed by a young girl named Annabelle who died on or near the property. Annabelle even caused injury to Donnas roommates finance. He claimed that the haunted doll strangled him in the middle of the night. On another occasion, an unseen force scratched him to pieces, while Annabelle was in the room. Donna realized the spirit possessing the doll may actually be evil and had an exorcism performed on the apartment. The priest that did the exorcism contacted demonologists Louise and Ed Warren who operate a museum of haunted objects in Monroe, Connecticut. They now house the doll in their museum in a marked box warning visitors to leave her alone.
