10 Heroic Dogs You've Probably Never Heard Of

Man's best friend for good reason. We salute these dogs for their bravery.

Dogs are undoubtedly man's best friend. With a love and loyalty almost unsurpassed, they ease their way into our hearts with but a look and (possibly) an extremely squishy face. Ask yourself, though: could you expect your pet to save you from a burning building? To drag your drowning body out of a lake? What if you were being shot at by the enemy... could you rely on your dog to save you then? We can all agree that it takes a special sort of character to be a hero, and this also applies to dogs. For every fifty dogs who cower and bark at the sound of thunder, there might be one that stands tall in the face of fear. In this article we're going to show you a variety of heroic dogs who have saved people and been honoured for it by the People's Dispensary for Sick Animals - the PDSA. They award several types of medals and certificates for bravery but two in particular are of note €“ the Dickin Medal, and the Gold Medal. These two medals are said to be the animal equivalent of the Victoria Cross and the George Cross, respectively, with the Dickin Medal being awarded for military dogs, and the Gold Medal for Police and service dogs. These dogs have not only served with the military through some of the toughest scenarios of the Second World War and the War in Afghanistan, but have also served with our Police forces and as service dogs. Every single one of these dogs have saved lives, and they deserve to be household names for their efforts. So, in no particular order, here are 10 examples of heroism from the canine world...
