Following the horrific events of September 11th 2001, the thirst for retaliation amongst the American people was thoroughly understandable, and present in abundance.

Iraqi President Saddam Hussein's government and its alleged links to terrorist organisation Al-Quaeda was perhaps reason enough for President Bush and Tony Blair's engagement in what would later become known as the 'War on Terror', but it was also the understanding that Iraq had stockpiled weapons of mass destruction (WMD).

Engaging in warfare with Iraq was deeply polarising to the American people, and President Bush's decision to invade the country was naturally met with its fair share of criticism. The criticism would only increase tenfold after the realisation that Iraq in fact didn't have access to such devastating weaponry.

It's still unknown if this was an oversight on the part of American officials or an engagement of war that was for more personal reasons.

What followed is a long, convoluted affair, which has rendered large parts of the middle-east highly dangerous to tourists from the west. The deeply unfortunate events that occurred were once seen by many to be rational, and the belief that Iraq had access to WMD's was a lie we all fell for.
