9. Chimpanzees Go To War

This isn't just a work of fiction - "Planet Of The Apes" is real. Of course, humans murdering each other by the thousands due to the invisible borders they were born in is totally disturbing in itself; but sadly we're generally desensitised to those horrors now. One thing we don't expect to hear about is monkey warfare. Most famous was the Gombe Chimpanzee War - a violent four year conflict that ended in 1978. Two communities of chimps in a national park occupied their territories respectively; dividing themselves into Northern and Southern groups. The war began when six Northern chimps deliberately attacked and killed "Godi", a young Southern male; in turn spurring the Southern chimps to kill the six Northern murderers, as well as beat, rape and kidnap their females. Grim indeed.
