Drayton Manor Theme Park was recently voted in the top ten for England’s best theme parks in Britain. The establishment includes hotel accommodation, 4D cinema and a variety of exciting rides, ranging from family friendly to the ones which are only for thrill seekers. It was also home to the late G-Force roller coaster – the only ‘X-Car’ ride in England and at the time, only the third in the entire world.

G-Force had some unique features to it. Instead of shoulder restraints, it used special hip restraints which allowed more freedom of movement for the upper body. The inverted lift of the ride, known as the humpty-bump lift, was similar to a standard vertical loop. At the top of the lift, riders were suspended upside down and the train was released to traverse two more inversions, including an Immelmann loop. The queue line also featured projections and screens as well as an original soundtrack to make the wait more interesting.

The ride wasn’t always enjoyed as many passengers complained about the unusual restraints being uncomfortable, sometimes even causing pain to the rider. There was also a minor incident in 2010 when the ride failed to gain enough height to join the hill lift after the station. All passengers were unharmed but the coaster needed to be closed for a safety inspection. A second incident occurred in 2017 where a train got stuck upside down on for the lift hill for a few hours. Once again, nobody was seriously hurt but passengers got their heads examined for any hidden fatalities.

On the 12th of October 2018, it was announced that the roller coaster would be retired over a press conference. G-Force had already faced a lot of down time that year after the trains were sent away for modification and kept breaking down. The ride had become too expensive to maintain because of its constant faults and wasn’t worth staying open for business.

By early 2019, G-Force had been completely removed with only scraps and rubble left over. There is still a debate over what should replace it.
