In 1996, Six Flags Great Adventure announced that it would be adding the “Batman & Robin: The Chiller” roller coaster with the intent of promoting the upcoming Batman & Robin movie which was set to premier a year later. The Observatory scenery piece, that eventually loomed over the launch tracks and exit ramps, was taken directly from the film source material. The colour scheme of the tracks were also an homage to the titular movie characters (painted blue for Batman and red for Robin).

The ride began with LIM launch system that propelled the trains from 0 to 65 miles per hour in approximately four seconds. Both the Batman and Robin tracks went to the same height (200 feet) and same maximum speed (65mph), only varied by how high they dropped. Much like the Dragon Challenge ride, both tracks ran simultaneously but could no longer continue with this particular element as it used up too much power.

But despite all the thrilling features it boasted, the Batman & Robin coaster was extremely problematic and passengers often left the ride in pain rather than with exhilaration. The Chiller underwent several treatments and momentary terminations just to continue functioning. The trains would often get stuck or stall before hurtling upwards towards the drop. Even worse, customers who did get the chance to ride found the over the shoulder restraints to be very uncomfortable and many complained of headaches.

In 2007, after years of maintenance issues, frequent down time, expenses and dissatisfied guests (not to mention the actual Batman & Robin movie which inspired the ride was a failure in itself), the authorities decided to end and dismantle The Chiller for good.
