10 Most Infamous Supernatural Hoaxes

2. The Amityville Horror

There's no shortage of horror film that claim to be €œbased on true events€, and 100% of them are absolute nonsense. Perhaps the most famous such movie was The Amityville Horror, the classic seventies haunted house flick that was itself based on the infamous €œreal life€ events that rocked a nice middle-class family who moved into a nice big old house in New York State...ONLY FOR THERE TO BE GHOSTS ALL UP INSIDE OF IT. Yeah, no, there wasn't. No ghosts. Obviously, because ghosts aren't real. The film was actually adapted from a best-selling book by Jay Anson, which was said to be based on the real-life paranormal experiences of the Lutz family. A book which led to controversy and lawsuits over its truthfulness. "More hideously frightening than The Exorcist because it actually happened!" was how the book was marketed, with the film hoping to trade off similar hype when it was released a few years later. Anson claimed there was too much evidence and independent eyewitnesses to discredit the story, but basically everyone begged to differ, and it's widely considered to be bunk.
