10 Inventors Who Hated Their Own Creations
4. Ethan Zuckerman - The Pop-Up Ad
So up until now you may have disagreed with all the hate. You may have a labradoodle you love, or enjoy Super Mario for its...charm. Or really like dynamite for its uses in mining precious medals. But there is no way anyone can disagree with Ethan Zuckerman and that terrible horrible no good very bad thing he did.
Now advertising is important, especially to those in the creative field. Without advertising there is no economic stability for magazines, television, or even content driven websites like this one. This revenue is required for the livelihood of many professionals. That being said, there is a big difference between a man in the street telling you 'It's a perfect day for a Coke.' and a man following you around yelling 'drink Coke!' and implying that your penis needs enlarging.
This is where Ethan Zuckerman and his new code come in. Originally dealing with the problem that advertisers were unhappy with the way their products were marketed on specific webpages, Zuckerman created a code that would open an ad in a separate window rather than being shackled to the banner of a specific page. But therein lies the problem: where once a webpage creator would need to find a balance between revenue and content, people were now free to sell as much space as they possibly could, because if the internet is just a series of never-ending tubes then we can put as many windows in those tubes as we want.
Zuckerman even went so far as to apologise
to the internet, all the internet, for his hand in creating the
pop-up ad.
