Kelly was a bushranger (these were Australian outlaws who lived in the bush). He formed the Kelly Gang along with his brother Dan Kelly, Joe Byrne, and Steve Hart.

They mostly committed minor crimes like horse theft and roadside holdups, until a group of policemen were sent to arrest them. The attempted arrest resulted in three of the four cops being killed; the gang then went on the run.

The gang stayed on the run for two years, robbing banks. During one robbery they overpowered the local police and stole their uniforms. Not for any later plot, just for fun.

In June 1880, after an abortive attempt to derail a train full of police, they holed up in an inn with around 60 hostages and a bunch of homemade armour. The rest of the gang died; Kelly escaped to the bush but then came back to try and rescue his brother.

The police, having realised he was wearing armour, aimed for his unprotected legs. He was captured, tried and hanged age 25.

Part of the reason the Kelly Gang were able to avoid capture for so long was that during this period in Australia many people were not too fond of the police – after Kelly's arrest some 30,000 people even signed a petition calling for a reprieve.
