10 Legendary Manhunts
5. John Dillinger
John Dillinger went through a lot to avoid capture; and rewarded himself handsomely for his trouble.
He was a fairly traditional Depression-era gangster who made a career of robbing banks. Untraditionally, Dillinger also made a habit of robbing police stations: he wasn't shy about who he was.
He was also a very clever man who managed to escape from prison twice, on one occasion using a fake gun made of wood.
He underwent rudimentary plastic surgery to change his appearance and had the surgeon burn off his fingerprints with acid, a painful and dangerous process which later proved to have been futile, as his prints were later used to ID his body.
While on the run he spent the summer of 1934 living in Chicago where he felt bold enough to attend baseball games (he was a Cubs fan).
The FBI found him after a tip from Anna Sage, a Romania brothel owner – in exchange for information she was promised help with her impending deportation (she was deported anyway).
The really embarrassing thing about the Dillinger manhunt is that the federal government spent more money trying to catch him than he actually stole.
