8. The Amber Room
The Amber Room was located in the Catherine Palace near Saint Petersburg and was constructed entirely from intricately caved amber paneling with gold leaf trims. The room was built during the 1800s and given as gift from the King of Prussia, Frederick William I to Tsar Peter the Great of Russia. Once installed into the Russian palace, the room spanned more than 55 square metres and was considered to be an eighth wonder of the world. During the Second World War, the Russians attempted to hide the room from Nazi invaders by covering it in wallpaper.
This attempt at deception sadly failed and the Nazis seized the room, dismantling and taking it back to East Prussia. Their plan was to reassemble the room and install in it in Konigsberg Castle but by the end of the war the room had disappeared without a trace. It is highly likely that the room was destroyed during British and Soviet bombing raids on Konigsberg in the final days of the war.
