10 Mind-Blowing Facts About Che Guevara

4. He Was Nicknamed 'El Chancho' - 'The Pig'

With all these revolutions at hand, Che was so preoccupied he apparently didn't have too much time to adhere to proper hygiene standards.

As a child, Che was severely asthmatic. He also disdained washing and bathing as he was said to have suffered badly from the respiratory problems brought on by cold bathing. As a result, Che was known to have worn, what Jon Lee Anderson termed, 'weekly shirts'.

This was a habit that earned him the nickname 'El Chancho' - 'The Pig'. He apparently wasn't too nice on the nostrils.

Although, 'El Chancho' was a name Che would come to embrace throughout the course of his life. If there are any inherent feelings within Che Guevara, it is his empathy for the poor and poverty-stricken, and his uncleanliness was often construed as taking on certain characteristics of the people he sought to liberate from the exploits of capitalism. Moreover, Che's reputation as a ruthless and fierce military commander instilled an atmosphere of intimidation surrounding the man, thus, it is reported people were too often fearful to comment on his hygiene.
