The Argentinians aren't the only ones who have turned tail and fled after hearing about the coming of the Gurkhas. Long before they were such an integral part of the British Army, the Gurkhas had made their fighting prowess known by doing battle against their eventual allies.

During an event that came to be known as the Great Indian Mutiny - which occurred in 1857 and involved the local sepoys turning against their British officers - a rumour got started in the Indian town of Simla that Gurkhas were on their way.

That news should have been positive for the predominantly British inhabitants of the town. However, despite being a part of the British Indian Army at the time, the rumour was that the arriving forces were actually going to take the side of the sepoys and join them in battle against the British.

That was enough for the British residents of the town, who immediately panicked and fled the area as quickly as they could. There are even stories of men abandoning their wives and children in an effort to escape what they thought was coming.
