10 Monsters People Claim Are Real (That Totally Don't Exist)

10. Rods

A Rods A popular paranormal fad in the late 1990€™s €“ mid 2000€™s, €˜Rods€™ as they came to be known, were allegedly some sort of unknown animal, usually speculated to be of extraterrestrial origin. Supposedly invisible to the naked eye, Rods were usually described as being long, cylindrical creatures with a soft, squid-like membrane running along both sides. They were also capable of flight (or at least hovering), leading some to call them €˜skyfish€™. They could not be seen or touched, but were frequently captured on camera from 1994 €“ 2005. UFOlogist Jose Escamilla was the first to notice these €˜creatures€™ in 1994 as he was hanging around in Roswell, New Mexico, trying to film UFOs (all true). After his €˜discovery€™, television documentaries were made, articles were written and various nutters worried that we were all about to be conquered by an army of unseen alien assailants. Until 2005, that is, when a team of Chinese scientists filmed a television documentary that handily demonstrated that all these €˜rods€™ ever had been were camera-based optical illusions born from the wingbeats of small insects. A large number of these rods were seen flying into nets in the film, but when those nets were examined, nothing other than a large number of moths were discovered inside. Despite this case being well and truly closed nearly a decade ago, there are still people out there that believe in the existence of rods.

I am a professional author and lifelong comic books/pro wrestling fan. I also work as a journalist as well as writing comic books (I also draw), screenplays, stage plays, songs and prose fiction. I don't generally read or reply to comments here on What Culture (too many trolls!), but if you follow my Twitter (@heyquicksilver), I'll talk to you all day long! If you are interested in reading more of my stuff, you can find it on http://quicksilverstories.weebly.com/ (my personal site, which has other wrestling/comics/pop culture stuff on it). I also write for FLiCK http://www.flickonline.co.uk/flicktion, which is the best place to read my fiction work. Oh yeah - I'm about to become a Dad for the first time, so if my stuff seems more sentimental than usual - blame it on that! Finally, I sincerely appreciate every single read I get. So if you're reading this, thank you, you've made me feel like Shakespeare for a day! (see what I mean?) Latcho Drom, - CQ
