10 Most-Evil Nazis You’ve Never Even Heard Of
3. Friedrich Wegener - A Scientist Who Experimented On Inmates But Who Was Never Tried For His Crimes
A pathologist who discovered a disease originally known as "Wegener's granulomatosis", Friedrich Wegener was likely heavily involved in experimenting on inmates in concentration camps and Jewish ghettos - although he was never tried for any crimes. A keen Nazi supporter who would walk around with his Party membership card and propaganda, Wegener was a member of the National Socialists even before Adolf Hitler joined - and he is believed to have helped groom the future German leader.
As a high-ranking military physician, Wegener was based in a medical office close to the ódź Ghetto in Poland, where he is believed to have performed experiments on Jews. It is alleged he tested out new drugs and performed experiments that included injecting things into the body of his victims. He may also have dissected live patients in order to experiment on their still-active organs.
Wegener managed to keep his Nazi past hidden until after his death in 1990 though, and was even given the "master clinician" prize by the American College of Chest Physicians for his discovery of his own disease. Once his Nazi past was uncovered in 1990 this prize was rescinded, however, while there have been many campaigns to have the disease he discovered renamed so it no longer glorifies Wegener.
