10 Most Expensive Paintings Ever Sold

1. When Will You Marry? (Paul Gauguin) - £200.0m ($300.0m)

So here it is, the most expensive painting in history - and it was only sold in February 2015! French Post-Impressionist Paul Gauguin's 1892 masterpiece Nafea faa ipoipo - or "When Will You Marry?" - depicts two Tahitian women in missionary clothing and "primitive dress". After spending nearly 50 years on loan to the Kunstmuseum in Basel, Switzerland, businessman and art collector Rudolf Staechelin sold the painting privately for a reported $300.0million (£200.0million) in February 2015. Although the buyer remained private, it is again believed that the Royal Family of Qatar purchased the painting - meaning the Gulf State now boasts the two most-expensive artworks ever sold.
