Glamis Castle may have had a visit from the Devil himself... Earl Beardie was an alcoholic and a gambler and one night, he scared his servants and guests into playing a game of cards with him, but they all refused as it was the Sabbath. The more he drank, the more aggressive he became and he began shouting that he wished that he could play the Devil himself. But was his wish granted? After hearing a harsh knock on the door, the figure of a man appeared and wished to sit with Earl Beardie to play. Servants heard horrific sounds coming from the room with the two men and one woman tried to see what was happening through the door hole. She lost her eye as it was burned out of her skull. No one recognised this stranger and the Earl died a few days later. The room that they played cards in was sealed up and the Earl has supposedly been locked in there with the Devil ever since, playing cards for all eternity. Glamis Castle is also said to have been haunted by The White Lady who was burned as a witch in the 16th Century. Lady Janet Douglas was murdered after being found guilty to charges of treason after she was accused of plotting to poison the King. Her ghost is often seen around the chapel and staff members have reserved an empty seat for her in there.
