From January to April of 1968, 6,000 United States Marines and allied troops were surrounded in a fort, Khe Sanh, in South Vietnam by besieging North Vietnamese forces that numbered over 17,000. American infantry was supported by numerous airstrikes, airdrops, and bombing runs by the US Air Force.

The battle lasted almost four months, as the North Vietnamese attacked the fortress five times, and were repelled all of those times. Many artillery bombardments and heavy air strikes prevented North Vietnamese Communist forces from taking the fort. It was a feat for the United States to accomplish due to being initially outnumbered by nearly a 3:1 ratio.

The North Vietnamese began to withdraw attacking forces in late March. Much like other historical events of being outnumbered and keeping on the “good fight”, the United States held out though being outnumbered.

This yet again proved the strength and fighting capability of the US Army and its determination against the oncoming monster of communism. Though later, North Vietnamese forces would take Saigon and all of South Vietnam as the United States left the brutal Asian conflict.
