10 Most Important Events In History Caught On Film

5. Apollo 11 Moon Landing - 24 July 1969

When: 24 July 16, 1969

Where: Tranquility Base, Moon

What: At the beginning of the '60s, President John F. Kennedy declared that NASA would put a man on the Moon before the decade came to an end. In July of 1969, they did something long thought impossible; NASA landed on the Moon, whereupon Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin placed their immortal footprints.

Getting to the moon was one of the most difficult and costly experiments in human history. Not only did NASA have to figure out how to get someone to the Moon, but they also needed to find a way to land, take off again, return to Earth, and survive the entire ordeal.

The endeavor required advancements in everything from rocketry and parachute design, to figuring out what sort of diapers the astronauts required. Following several developmental programs, NASA formed the Apollo mission, which would make several advancing steps toward the goal of landing and returning from the Moon.

The mission that managed to make the trip was Apollo 11, which was commanded by Armstrong. Being one of the most important achievements in all of human history, NASA recorded the event via live-feed cameras held by the astronauts as they bounded about the Lunar surface. It's been over 50 years, and mankind has yet to match this amazing achievement.
