Antonio Ferrara's speciality was always explosives. During his criminal career, the bank robber's party trick was blowing the hinges off safes and vaults without damaging the money inside.

Once the law caught up with him, he was sentenced to eight years at Fresnes Prison in France, but that didn't hold him for long, and it seems only fitting that his escape was explosive.

Like a cartoon character imprisoned at a Loony Tunes jail, Ferrara blew his cell door off with dynamite he was believed to have been given by a guard on his payroll.

The pyrotechnics fan had help escaping the main prison, in the form of a band of accomplices who stormed the joint wielding rocket-propelled grenade launchers and AK-47s. The plan wasn't exactly subtle, but it bought Ferrara four months of freedom.

He was later recaptured at a Paris bar following a large-scale undercover operation.
