When asked what his favourite book was out of his vast and eclectic bibliography, Stephen King gave the answer as Lisey's Story. Published in 2006, it's easy to see why the novel appeals to the author, but it's much harder to understand why more people haven't read it and why it isn't more widely talked about.

Lisey's Story focuses on Lisey, widow of a famous novelist called Scott Landon. As Lisey attempts to bring herself to clean out Scott's workspace, she begins getting bizarre and threatening phone calls and must deal with her sister's deteriorating mental state. As the threats escalate, Lisey recalls her husband's life and where he came from, and goes on a strange but enlightening journey in which she is offered the chance to save her sister and learn more about her husband's secret past.

A dark and menacing novel, it also features some of the most powerful and emotionally affecting scenes King has ever written, giving deep insight into how the human mind deals with grief and how the past affects who we become. It's cruel, it's beautiful, and it's absolutely unforgettable.
