You may know that the word headhunting originates from the tribal practice of decapitating enemies and preserving their heads. What you may not know is that some Taiwanese tribes, notably the Atayals, considered this tradition to be very romantic. Severed heads were used like engagement rings are today, and proudly shown off in public. In 1864, Richard Oldham wrote that he would not go to the Taiwanese mountains because Spring is the season at which the young savages marry they always fight either with other savages, or other Chinamen in order to get heads with which to celebrate their marriages, and it is possible they might take a particular liking for the heads of foreigners.
