10 Problems Only Graphic And Web Designers Will Understand

2. Why Isn€™t My Site At The Top Of The Google?

Okay. You€™ve built a project for the client. There€™s a logo, business cards, letterheads, brochures, company reports, a website, everything. You€™ve infused the website with the latest in SEO (search engine optimization) plugins and techniques. Everyone€™s happy, and you got paid! A few months later, the client calls. They want to know why the customers aren€™t beating a path to their door, after all the money they spent on getting it just right. They should be able to type their names into the Google search bar, and it should bring their company up first in line even before they finish typing, right? Congratulations. You are now required (for free) to spend an hour (at least) explaining how search engines work. Some companies pay to get at the top - those are called sponsored ads. Some companies get to the top because they are the most well-known in their particular field. But the biggest factor in rising €œabove the fold€ on the Google search? Fresh content. Are you adding any new content to your site? Are you doing so on a regular basis? The odds are that the answer is €œno.€ The next question: Do you remember me showing you how to log-in to the back end of the site and add content? Again, no. Okay, let€™s walk through it again. Got it? Now, do you have some content to add? No? Well, there€™s your problem. All through this, you have to maintain that professional demeanor that call center operators have to maintain all day, every day. Why? Because telling the customer he€™s too damn stupid to breathe is bad for business.
