10 Reactions Everyone Has Visiting World Famous Places
8. Can I Get A Little Closer Than The Viewing Deck?
Landmark/Attraction: Mount Rushmore National Memorial Location: Keystone, South Dakota Designer/Artist: Gutzon Borglum & Lincoln Borglum Completed: 1941 (Technically incomplete, due to lack of funding) Whenever the public sees photos of Mount Rushmore, the images are close up. The carved heads of Washington, Jefferson, Roosevelt, and Lincoln fill the entire frame. But for the average tourist, it is both misleading and impossible to get that close to the mountain sculpture. Instead, visitors are confined to a viewing deck platform that is miles away. Unless you have a good camera or binoculars, you must rely on those cheap machines where you 'pay-to-view' for a minute or two. Our advice? Go visit the Crazy Horse Memorial, which is just a few miles away. It's massive and far more impressive; the ENTIRE mountain will be carved into the legendary Sioux chief. It also has a great museum/visiting center, and you can drive right up to the massive face of the memorial.
