In 1989, Brigadier General Omar Al-Bashir took part in a military coup in which the democratically elected leader, Sadiq al-Mahdi, was ousted. Al-Bashir would then fill the forced vacancy and become the seventh prime minister of Sudan. The former general would remain in office until April of 2019.

The majority of deaths under Al-Bashir's rule occurred during The Second Sudanese Civil War. The war was a conflict between the nation's government and the Sudan People's Liberation Army. The struggle would end up claiming the lives of around 2 million people, most of whom were civilians who died of starvation and drought.

However, internationally speaking, Al-Bashir is perhaps best known for his association with the Darfur genocide. The former president allegedly ordered the killings of thousands of Darfuri, including women in children, in what would come to be known as the first genocide of the 21st century. The alleged atrocities committed during the event also include rape and torture. In total, the event is said to have claimed around 450,000 lives.

Between the two incidents, the former president is responsible for around 2.4 million deaths.

After being overthrown himself, Al-Bashir was handed over to the International Criminal Court in February of 2020 and is currently awaiting trial for his involvement in the Darfur genocide.
