10 Really Horrible Things Done By Great People

4. Roman Polanski Raped A 13-Year-Old Girl

Roman Polanski is considered one of the prolific film directors of all time. Born in 1931, he survived the holocaust in Poland, and began his career as a filmmaker after the war. His films have won countless awards including the coveted Cannes Film Festival's Palme d'Or and the Academy's Best Director Oscar. He continues to work with some of the most talented names in Hollywood and except for a few mishaps along the way (Pirates) has had a smashing career. Unfortunately... Polanski's life is forever tied to one particularly lurid event. In 1977, Polanski was arrested for raping a minor in the home of Jack Nicholson. While awaiting sentencing, he decided to take his chances and flee to France. There he continued to make awesome films, but never escaped his dark past. All in all, Polanski got pretty lucky. He has spent less than a year in prison for his crime, but has paid nearly five million dollars in bail bonds and settlements. What is almost more disturbing than the deed itself is how many of Roman's friends over the years have brushed off his crime as just a bit of 70s fun gone wrong.
