10 Science Myths Debunked

1. Chewing Gum Stays In Your Digestive System For 7 Years

The idea of 7 years worth of chewing gum clogging up you system is enough to stop you chewing the minty freshness, let alone swallowing it. But what is a kid to do when approached by a stern teacher exclaiming €œOpen your mouth!€ ready to hand you a detention slip for chewing the forbidden breath freshener. However, it doesn€™t actually take 7 years to digest chewing gum, a large part of it is made up of indigestible materials. Whilst your body can break some of the sweeteners and flavours down, the rest is usually excreted after a few days of knocking around in your intestines. That doesn€™t mean you should swallow gum whenever you please €“ the sticky substance can lodge onto other indigestible materials such as seeds, and cause masses that do stay in your system, requiring removal by a gastroenterologist. So whilst it is a myth, it€™s one with a cause €“ a bit of a white lie that is likely to stick around for longer than the gum that finds its way through your gullet.
