10 Simple Questions That Still Totally Baffle Scientists

8. What's In The Ocean?

We have poked and prodded nearly every corner of land on Earth, and yet, 95% of the ocean's floor remains unexplored. The deepest part of the ocean is over 6 miles down and has only been reached by either man or robot four times and this is only a minuscule pinprick of a needle in the gigantic, watery haystack. Not only have we not explored an enormous proportion of the sea floor, we also have to remember that there is then the rest of the ocean to tackle.

To explore on land you basically have to go left and right, to explore the ocean you have to go left, right, up, down and everywhere in between. With a total estimated volume of 0.3 billion cubic miles, the ocean is the largest habitat on Earth. For all we know, there's a community of hyper-evolved prehistoric marine giants under there who are all sitting around talking about how little of the Earth's land they've explored.
