Thomas Edison is regarded by many as America’s greatest inventor. Without him, the world we know would look very different.

He was born into a relatively poor family in the mid-nineteenth century and he didn’t receive a particularly good education, either. Edison also struggled with hearing problems, which – he later claimed – helped him achieve a higher level of focus and avoid distractions.

After earning some money as a street salesman, Edison worked as a telegrapher. But once telegraphs started to transmit audio, his impaired hearing became an issue. So, in the late 1860s, he became an inventor instead.

During his career, Edison developed the carbon transmitter, the phonograph, the lightbulb, and even a working motion camera known as the Kinetograph. And this great inventor deserves still more credit for his entrepreneurship. He knew how to market and monetise his creations and became incredibly wealthy.

Edison wasn't just a genius, therefore – he was inspirational. Despite his humble beginnings and his disability, he was able to succeed due to hard work, innovation, and intellect.
