This is particularly awkward for all involved, particularly if the person you are meeting for the first time is someone you want to make a good impression with. There's no official etiquette for this, and it can vary based on where you're from in the world. So when meeting someone for the first time, do you hug, shake hands, or kiss them on the cheek? If it's a kiss on the cheek, is it once or twice that you're supposed to do it? Is shaking hands too cold and business like? Is hugging far too informal? There are just so many questions! The most humiliating of all situations in this vein is when one or both of you miscalculate what the other thinks is appropriate. The hug/handshake is very awkward, after all.
