10 Strange Folklore Myths You Won't Believe

9. Vampires

A vampire is a mythical being who sustains life by feeding from the blood and essence of a living human and animals (if humans are in short supply). Folklore legends dictate that vampires were a result of people who murdered or committed suicide in their lifetime as being a vampire was their punishment for these atrocious crimes. There are many different variations of the vampire across the world as some countries believe that they exist because of the Devil (who made them), whereas others believe that they are a dead and monstrous form of their human self with some unfinished business. They normally return to loved ones to transform them into vampires too so that they can be reunited for eternity or they'll generally just eat people that they didn't like. In Ireland, the Dearg Due meaning 'red blood sucker' was a beautiful woman once upon a time and her family wanted her to marry for wealth and status as opposed to love. Unfortunately, she fell in love with a local peasant and ended up marrying a cruel husband who tortured her both physically and psychologically. She killed herself in an attempt to escape her evil partner and rose from the dead as a vampire where she killed her family and mostly men for her revenge. Money really isn't everything. In other areas of the world, there is such a thing as vampiristic pumpkins (yes a pumpkin) which would become possessed, grow to an excessive size and because of their lack of teeth wouldn't bite you, but squash you to death instead. You can't make this up.
