10 Strangest Vietnam War Unsolved Mysteries
3. Flying Tiger Line Flight 739
The date is 16 March 1962. A plane carrying 93 U.S. soldiers and three South Vietnamese from California to Saigon goes missing. This event leads to one of the biggest searches in the Pacific. The aircraft in question was a Lockheed L-1049 Super Constellation Propliner. After refueling at Andersen Air Force Base in Guam, the flight was due to arrive in the Philippines but was never seen again.
Over the course of eight days, over 200,000 square miles were searched. Many different reports of sightings came in. The most convincing of these was from a civilian tanker. They reported the plane suffered an in-flight explosion. Based on the tanker's report, it was decided by the Civil Aeronautics Board that this was the cause of the disappearance, although no wreckage or debris was ever found.
After the event, there were many different theories on the disappearance of the flight. One of the most likely was sabotage. Another plane of exactly the same make was lost not two days before, apparently carrying “secret military cargo." On top of this, another flight by the same company was destroyed under similar circumstances the same day. Various other eye witness accounts make these claims a possibility, but the location of the plane is a mystery to this day.
