It is called the beautiful game for a reason. Football or 'soccer' is massively popular in Britain. Most Brits were raised watching it, and even if they didn't love it they were very aware of it. Though the MLS and the sport itself has become more popular in recent years, football is often treated with derision in America. Their passion is American football, Basketball and Baseball. They are fervent about their teams even at the non-professional college level, and will happily pack out a stand for a Little League game. The Superbowl is watched by millions regardless of whether of not their team are playing, although it's odd that the biggest game of the year is held on a Sunday night. American sports fans will spew statistics at you with mind boggling speed. However if you ask many of these "sports fanatics" about a simple football rule, and you will be met with a blank stare or be told "only women play soccer," even if most of them played it before they went to college. Hell, Congressman Jack Kemp once went further, declaring it a game for "commie pansies." Changes are happening happening slowly with more and more games are being televised, and the likes of David Beckham and assorted star players crossing the Atlantic means football/'soccer' gets more coverage then it used to, and places like Portland and Seattle have growing football followings. Still for a Brit in America it is hard, having no one to share that passion with, not having fellow fans who love it as much as they do. While many Americans still maintain that no sporting event should end in a draw, ever, Brits just love every aspect of the sport.
