10 Terrifying Monsters That (We Hope!) Don't Exist

4. The Goatman

The Goatman, a monstrous, occasionally axe-wielding cryptid reported throughout Maryland, Kentucky and Texas, may have begun life as an especially nasty variant on the old €˜escaped lunatic outside the car€™ story, which is a popular urban legend throughout the Western world. He is normally described as being very tall, hairy and bipedal, with a twisted, goat-like head, an impressive set of horns and a perpetually bad temper! In Beltsville, Maryland, The Goatman is said to have once been a scientist that experimented on goats and subsequently became hideously deformed when one of his dodgy experiments went awry. In Louisville, Kentucky, a very different Goatman is known as The Pope Lick Monster (named for The Pope Lick Creek that he is said to inhabit). The Kentucky Goatman is more satyr-like in aspect, with fur-covered legs, cloven hooves and a hideously deformed upper body. However, just like his Maryland counterpart, The Pope Lick Goatman also wields an axe and occasionally climbs on top of cars. Pope Lick is sometimes said to be an escaped circus freak turned feral, who particularly delights in tricking €˜normal€™ passers by into standing before oncoming trains. Nice. In Texas, another Goatman variation is known as The Lake Worth Monster. This cryptid has scales as well as fur, but still bears more than a passing resemblance to The Maryland Goatman, which is why we mention him here. This Goatman once allegedly hurled tyres at as many as 10 witnesses, all of whom gave remarkably consistent descriptions of his appearance. ...Do angry, freakish Goatfolk actually haunt rural areas of North America? Probably not, but even still, it might not be wise to go wandering about after dark in Beltsville, Louisville or Fort Worth. You just never know...

I am a professional author and lifelong comic books/pro wrestling fan. I also work as a journalist as well as writing comic books (I also draw), screenplays, stage plays, songs and prose fiction. I don't generally read or reply to comments here on What Culture (too many trolls!), but if you follow my Twitter (@heyquicksilver), I'll talk to you all day long! If you are interested in reading more of my stuff, you can find it on http://quicksilverstories.weebly.com/ (my personal site, which has other wrestling/comics/pop culture stuff on it). I also write for FLiCK http://www.flickonline.co.uk/flicktion, which is the best place to read my fiction work. Oh yeah - I'm about to become a Dad for the first time, so if my stuff seems more sentimental than usual - blame it on that! Finally, I sincerely appreciate every single read I get. So if you're reading this, thank you, you've made me feel like Shakespeare for a day! (see what I mean?) Latcho Drom, - CQ
