The vast expanse of the USA probably allows some leeway here in assuming that a country that is about the size of Michigan may not have much vocal variation. The UK has MANY regions, all with hilariously indecipherable accents. The reason for this? The UK is VERY old. Many tongues have affected the accents there - Celtic, Anglo Saxon, Greek, French, Scandinavian, Frisian and Latin. Add this to the fact that up until fairly recently in historical terms, most people were born and would die in the same village, and there are the ingredients for a huge range of local dialects. Basically that is why, despite Manchester being a 45 minute train ride from Liverpool, they sound about as similar to each other as a chain saw and a yellowfin tuna.
