10 Things We Learned From Jim Gaffigan's Reddit AMA

4. Advice About Becoming A Standup Comic

980615

It's only fitting that aspiring comics would take to this Reddit AMA for the opportunity of asking Jim Gaffigan directly their questions. To one teenager who wanted to get into standup, Jim offered some very simple advice...

"Do it as much as you can, write as much as you can."

On another instance, there was a woman who seemed timid about trying out standup comedy. She asked Jim about how to overcome her nervousness and if being a female would mean more barriers to knock down.

"I grew up watching Carroll Burnett, Lily Tomlin, and reruns of Lucy. I think society is way more accepting of females being stand ups than when I started over 100 years ago. Being awkward on stage is a benefit - people respond to vulnerability. As Gladwell said, "10,000 hours"."
