10 Things You Didn't Know About Disney's The Haunted Mansion
10. The Hatbox Ghost
The Haunted Mansion claims that it is the home to 999 ghosts, but there is one who has been conspicuously absent for most of the house's storied and spooky history. The Hatbox Ghost was an original part of the attraction, with the spectre appearing near the attic of the ride to remove his head, only for it to then reappear in his hatbox. At least, that was the idea, but the illusion didn't quite work properly, leading to its removal. Since then it has built up something of a cult following, with rumours - mostly backed up by the 1969 album The Song and Story from the Haunted Mansion - that the Hatbox Ghost is actually the groom of the ghostly bride we see throughout the attraction. When Guillermo del Toro was discussing his plans for the movie back in 2010, he stated that his version would place a lot of focus on the character. While it had for a long time appeared that the figure was gone for good, back in January it was announced that he'd be returning to the ride to coincide with the park's 60th anniversary, and he took up his haunting duties once more on May 9. There is always room for one more ghost at the Haunted Mansion.
NCTJ-qualified journalist. Most definitely not a racing driver. Drink too much tea; eat too much peanut butter; watch too much TV. Sadly only the latter paying off so far.
A mix of wise-old man in a young man's body with a child-like wonder about him and a great otherworldly sensibility.
