10 Things You Need To Know About Dating Someone From Wales

8. What's That? TWO Valentine's Days?!

That's right, the Welsh are hopelessly romantic so don't be fooled by their tough guy, muscular exteriors as they're all kitty cats underneath, even the ladies. So not only do the Welsh celebrate the traditional date for Valentine's Day on February 14th, but they also recognise the 25th January as Dydd Santes Dwynwen, the Welsh equivalent of V. Day. The day celebrates the life of Dwynwen, the Welsh Saint of love. Although there are different variations of the tale, depending on location and their local oral traditions, the story is that of Dwynwen who fell in love with a man called Maelon, but they could not be together because her father would not bless their union. She prays to fall out of love with him and is then visited by an angel who will give her a potion to erase all of her memories of Maelon (and will then casually turn him into a block of ice). God then grants her three wishes where she asks Maelon to thaw, that true lovers will have all of their hopes and dreams blessed upon them and thirdly, that she will never marry. She then dedicates the rest of her life to God. Cheers Dwynwen, for another day of buying a card that people will chuck away after a week.
