Founded in 2010 by Stanford grads Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger, Instagram is a photo sharing social network that currently has over 300 million monthly users (as of December 2014). If youre not an Instagram user, never fear - you might still recognise the term selfie which derives from the 57 million hash tags plastered all over Instagram in its many variations. The Oxford Dictionary actually named it word of the year in 2013 because so many people evidently just love taking photos of their own faces. With various facial expressions. In a variety of poses. With 25 different filters to choose from, even the most amateur of photographers can pretty up a shot of the great outdoors, or get a detailed close up of their Labrador, or take a great black and white shot of your family.
