1. 'Bone'-fires

While in England, Bonfire Night falls on November 5th to commemorate the Gunpowder Plot, the tradition of setting bon-fires was actually part of the Irish tradition of Halloween. The word bonfire is believed to come from the term "bone fire" and had creepier connotations. Whilst nowadays we cook marshmallows and baked potatoes on bonfires, originally they were used to burn bones in the belief that this would deter dragons.
